Initially I started doing Pilates just to try something different. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I’d heard it was good for your posture and flexibility. After an hour long class I felt relaxed and released. I would get in to my car after the class and have to adjust my mirror to drive home as, without even realising it, I had shaken off my usual slouched posture.
Due to the time restraints of a busy working life I was unable to attend Pilates courses for a while but when I developed lower back pain I returned to Pilates and this time tried a different school: Body Control Pilates®. I was hooked. After each class my back pain would ease a little more. I felt thinner and stronger, invigorated and full of energy. I was able to take control of my back pain and maintain it without having to rely on painkillers. This is when I realised the importance of good body alignment and how effective Pilates can be.
Pilates is a focused discipline, so its effectiveness rests on good quality teaching. Amidst the boom in Pilates’ popularity, Body Control Pilates® is a well-established school, and one of its most respected providers. All Body Control teachers work to a code of practice which governs teaching standards, professional ethics and continuing education.
In 2009 I decided to train as a Body Control Pilates® teacher, and I was fortunate enough to go on to train with some of the best in the industry so I became a Certified Pilates Instructor.
I now run Pilates classes in Newcastle Upon Tyne to help other people realise the benefits of Pilates and the positive effect it can have on the body. Anyone can join a class although we do have a range of classes available. Classes normally run as a six week course.
